Atlanta's most popular attractions have to be the Coca-Cola Museum, the Georgia Aquarium, The High Museum and the Martin Luther King Center. There are many more that we detail more fully in our new feature on Frenchtowner.com. Our main focus here is our favorite attraction; the Georgia Aquarium. It was an incredible experience for us that we will never forget.
For some reason however, there are hordes of visitors that hate the Georgia Aquarium and have posted their discontent on sites like Tripadvisor.com and others. They hate the attraction so much that they have made it one of the least favorite big attractions in Atlanta. As of late January 2008 the Georgia Aquarium is ranked in 29th place on Tripadvisor's Atlanta Attractions listings. Mind you in that position, bars and clubs like Tongue and Groove and Masquerade are rated as better places to visit than the aquarium. This is certainly not deserved in our opinion.
Some of the most common complaints include: crowds, traffic flow, lack of signage, pricing, parking and the need for more educational information. We did not have these issues with the aquarium. We did plan our trip for a weekday morning so that the crowds would not be as heavy. Also January is most likely one of the slower times of year. In no way did we feel that the exhibits needed any more signage or any more explanation. We both have backgrounds in the visual arts however and we did not feel like we needed any words to label the wonders that played out in front of us.
There are some visitors who felt that the aquarium had somehow cheapened the exhibitions and Disneyfied everything. We did not go into see the movie that features the cartoon fish but we did not get that impression from the exhibits at all.
Our only complaint about the Georgia Aquarium was that the gift shop was tacky and juvenile. Overall the merchandise looked cheap and badly made. I have no problem with toys and t-shirts, but any educational attraction like this could offer a much broader selection of souvenirs, books, giftware, clothing and educational games.
