Atlantic Station was chosen for our Best of Atlanta list because of the strength of the concept and the design. This development is much more than a strip mall disguised as Main Street in a small American town:* It is a real community with commercial, residential and recreation space. The place has a great sense of scale, where the streets and the stores and the residences above all relate to each other beautifully.
It feels like a city that has been there for a long time. When we were there, the streets, the restaurants and the stores were all vibrant. There is a great positive energy to Atlantic Station and that is something that doesn’t always come as an automatic byproduct of great design and great planning. People have to respond to that design and accept it, so that it can thrive. That seems to have happened here and the entire city of Atlanta is richer for it.
The project cost more than two billion dollars and the planning began more than a decade ago. This 138 acre project includes; six million square feet of office space, two million square feet of retail space for stores, theaters and restaurants and 11 acres of parks. In addition to this it includes at least 3,000 homes and/or apartments, 1,000 hotel rooms.
Our favorite store at Atlantic Station was West Elm, a furniture and home decor store. Other notable retailers at Atlantic Station are: Dillard's Department Store, Target, Banana Republic, Gap, Bosa Nova Med Spa, A T + T, IKEA and Publix.

*Note* In a town down the road from us here in New Jersey, a new development has just been built behind Bridgewater Commons Mall. The new development is gorgeous, but it feels just like an upscale version of a small town somewhere, anywhere in America, which of course it isn’t, it’s just a new gussied up form of a strip mall. Like I said, it is beautifully done. You can see it online here. [see Village at Bridgewater Commons]
