The history of customizing cars began in the late 1940's after WWII. The story of this history has been documented online by The Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. You can read their fascinating article online here.

Today the movement has been a given an incredible boost by popular TV shows like Pimp My Ride and a host of imitators on other networks.
