Being the peculiar travelers that my partner and I are, we were highly skeptical about going to the Georgia Aquarium. We were fully expecting to be bored to tears by a silly sideshow with too much hype, like you might find at a county fair or carnival. What we discovered instead was a marvel of showmanship, technology and educational tourism. It's rare that anything can turn 2 cynical old codgers into awestruck children like this place did a couple of weeks ago.
The Georgia Aquarium opened its doors on November, 23, 2005 and since that time has entertained millions of visitors from all over the world. It was largely built with funds donated by the founder and owner of Home Depot as a gift to the city of Atlanta and especially downtown Atlanta. The Aquarium is now part of a huge complex of attractions that will ensure the vitality of downtown Atlanta. Other popular destinations nearby include Centennial Park, The World of Coca-Cola (Coke Museum), The Georgia World Congress Center (Atlanta Convention Center), CNN, The Georgia Dome, Centennial Park, The Atlanta Merchandise Mart, Atlanta Gift Mart, and more.
Surrounding this huge entertainment complex are the biggest and best names in the hospitality industry; Hilton Hotels, The Ritz Carlton, Sheraton Hotels, Hyatt Hotels, Marriot Hotels, Omni Hotels, Westin Hotels and more. Other more economical hotels located nearby are: The Holiday Inn, Super 8, and Embassy Suites. With this many hotel rooms located this close to the aquarium; you should be able to find a great room at a great price within walking distance.
During our visit to the aquarium we took hundreds of photos that we thought were turning out beautifully when we played them back immediately after taking them. Unfortunately, only a handful of these pictures turned out good enough to save. We recommend that you take your best digital or SLR camera when you go. Most cameras will not work very well inside the aquarium. The main problems are lighting and movement. The tanks for the most part are too dark to allow enough light for you to take good photos and besides that, the fish just move too darned fast. The use of flash only puts glare on the Lucite tanks, scares the fish and irritates the people next to you. Even with very fast shutter speeds, it is extremely hard to get a nicely composed shot with the fish in just the right spot, turned the right way. We were not alone in having this problem. We overheard other couples complaining about the same problems with their photos.
