The Woodruff Art Center includes The High Museum of Art, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Hall, Atlanta College of Art, Young Audiences of Atlanta, Alliance Theatre and the 14th Street Playhouse. This city of the arts at the heart of the downtown area makes Atlanta more vibrant and modern.
We have a love and hate relationship with the High Museum. We love Richard Meier's and Renzo Piano's modern minimalistic designs, but we hate the way in which the museum itself seems to be fighting for recognition and overshadowing the art. Time and time again we found empty walls and empty spaces at the High that seemed to be there so that those bothersome paintings, prints and sculptures wouldn't mess up your view of the building.
We love the fact that any museum is busy enough to need crowd control, but it is truly frustrating when the crowds get so large that you can't see the art for the hordes of people walking in front of it. We have been to many very popular exhibitions and witnessed what good crowd control is and the High Museum failed miserably for their Inspiring Impressionism show in January. There was such a glut of people walking around with their audio guides that it was impossible to walk through the galleries, much less view the works of the artists. As we were leaving in total disgust, the problem was only getting worse, as the guards were bringing in a crowd of 50 more people into the same overcrowded ones we had just left.
We loved the Napoleonic treasures from The Louvre and the Ancient World show. It was enlightening to see the early religious works of Iran, Iraq and Egypt. In today's fundamentalist climate these works would have been destroyed in the name of religious purity and that part of human history would have been obliterated.
The plaza between the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra building and the High Museum is an impressive public space for the city and one that feels very comfortable. It is clean, modern and open.
